Building a Better Novel, Part 1: The Foundation

I tend to be a pantser rather than a plotter.  Pantsers fly by the seats of our pants.  There are inherent drawbacks as well as rewards for using this method.  Rewards include the joy of discovery and the freedom to change things.  

However, I am starting to explore plotting.  Plotting feels like a straitjacket to me, but Plotters tend to write a lot more books, and this definitely interests me!
